FastForward Adventure Reporters Camp

By Lily Leone, Marin Academy, 10th Grade

First walking onto the Industrial Light & Magic campus I was immediately seized with excitement. This is where the magic happens, I thought to myself. A museum of “Star Wars” props lined the lobby. Lightsabers, blasters, and full-scale replicas of characters make known the legendary reputation of the company best known for bringing beloved characters to life since 1975. Despite the chill of the frigid San Francisco wind, both I and the rest of our group of intrepid reporters buzzed with excitement. After meticulous research on the company, and brainstorming to spark the most interesting questions, we were set and ready to interview Jeanie King, the executive producer at Industrial Light & Magic. Getting to interview her was not only an honor but also an eye-opening experience allowing me to get a unique perspective on filmmaking and production I never would have received if it had not been for FastForward

The plethora of new experiences I have had in FastForward’s summer journalism program has been truly unique with endlessly valuable opportunities. In my time, I have had the privilege to learn about the experiences of people in so many different fields and that opened up a new world of fascinating and intriguing experiences for me. By far the best part was getting to share those experiences with the world through FastForward magazine. FastForward summer camps provide any camper with not only many new and remarkable experiences but also teach students how to write journalistic articles and ask interesting questions.

Under the guidance of the wonderful camp counselors at Fast Forward, my approach to nonfiction writing was completely transformed. I learned how to integrate rich descriptional details into a piece of journalism and how to fluidly integrate quotes from interviews into articles. The ability to write compelling nonfiction and ask good questions have remained skills I use nearly every day in my classes and I am so grateful FastForward taught me these endlessly valuable skills.

FastForward has taught me so much and has provided me with so many fascinating experiences I never would have sought out otherwise. For me, some of the most remarkable experiences I have had have been the ones I knew the least about initially, such as going to Studio Hinrichs, a small boutique graphic design company. Going into the interview I had no idea what to expect, but I soon became enthralled by all the planning and artistry that goes into branding and logos for the companies Studio Hinrichs works with. Learning about the remarkable thought and care put into every logo in our lives was truly fascinating. As in every FastForward interview, I left the studio with feelings of anticipation to write my article, as the ideas swirled endlessly in my head. That curiosity and drive to seek out new experiences was by far the most valuable thing I have gained from participating in FastForward’s summer program. I encourage anyone interested in writing, journalism, or anyone simply seeking to experience something new to take part in FastForward and find your own fascinating story.
